Right on the nail head. Large open spaces with no structural columns such as found in super markets, bowling allies, show rooms etc. has for years presented very dangerous and sometimes lethal outcomes to firefighters. You do not go on the roof and you do not go inside period unless there is a life in peril within and only then if prudent. I am a big avocate in that all officers from Lieutenant and up to take coarses in the Strength of Materials in Building Construction to include Fire Ratings and Resistance. Fire Dynamics and Fire Behavior in Buildings of different forms of construction to include the all important Light Weight Open Web Combustible Structural members, in fact stay out of there. I know that we are very different here but in the UK to be a firefighter I understand that one had to have at least three years experiance in one of the building trades. An Officer when promoted must have an Engineering Degree or equivalent. Fortunately many Volunteer Fire Companies have a leg up here as many of them are in the building trades and many are Industrial Firefighters as well. The Career Fire Departments could well follow suite particularly if they would join with their Volunteer Brothers and Sisters at the various fire training centers. Both can learn from each other and that is a fact Jack. I know I am going to catch Hell here but made it a point to get my CFPS seal and I think that it has paid off hamsomely, at least I came out with no serious injuries with very successful fire suppression outcomes on the waterfront over 30 years as fire chief. Education particularly in the building construction business and in Hazardous Materials business is the only way to go.

1.	Excellent story and an example for all to follow as we are all get drawn up in HRE’s throughout our careers and many times these may lead to life sanctions or the remorse event of a LODD – based upon our understanding of what is more valuable and whether or not lives are being saved in these active processes.
So many are faithful to building structure because most have never seen it fail as in the case of the collapses during structural fatigue found in these building fires. However, if the people were exposed to hurricane, tornado, flood, or explosion early in life they bear the thought of such possibilities through life and learn not to trust all structure when fatigue is expected. Many youth have the immortality mindset until faced with actual death.
The performance of a training needs analysis would reveal if these need to be ad-dressed during annual safety training to prevent to unnecessary LODD event as HRE’s are examined and thoughts provoked to make the individual aware of structural weak points based upon building composition and structure. These should have been assessed before the team entered the buildings in each case.
Thanks for the thought provoking article Christopher.

The performance of a traiing needs analysis would reveal if these need to be addressed during annual safeety training to prevent to unnecessary LODD event as HRE's are examined and thoguhts provoked to make the individual aware of structural weak points based upon building composition and structure.
