Taking it to the Streets: Building Construction, Command Risk Management & Safety.
Chief Christopher Naum, SFPE Command Institute
A thought provoking look at building construction and command safety with emphasis on firefighter safety and survival on the fireground. The program will review key building construction systems, occupancies, assemblies and features with emphasis on dynamic risk assessment, naturalistic decision making and safety insights. The program will challenge the notions on aggressive fire suppression theory and promote reinforcing decisive command and company officer leadership and aligning towards safety conscious combat fire engagement. The new mantra of “Building Knowledge = Firefighter Safety” will be reinforced. The program will stress and address strategies, tactics, dynamic risk assessment, crew resource management, case studies and redefining combat fire suppression operations within the volunteer and small career system organizations.

Five Star Command: Redefining Firefighter Safety 4 hour Program Christopher J. Naum, SFPE
The focus is on changing the safety culture of the fire service by redefining methodologies for firefighter safety during combat structural fire engagement and incident operations. Students are introduced to the fundamental core relationships of building construction, risk management, firefighter behaviors, incident operations and situational safety. You will come away with an intelligent and safe approach toward unified fireground safety, risk reduction, operational superiority and company integrity. This class will be presented on Thursday and Friday by Christopher Naum, SFPE, Chief of Training, Command Institute, Washington, D.C.

Building Construction and Risk Management
Thursday April 22, 2010 3:30 pm- 5:15pm Room TBA
Christopher J. Naum, SFPE, Chief of Training, Command Institute, Washington, DC
Today’s firefighters have a profound need to understand building systems and occupancy performance under fire conditions. Participants will gain an understanding of inherent construction features and hazards that directly influence effective risk management and decisive strategic and tactical considerations with a focus on key construction features, inherent occupancy profiles that will influence strategic, tactical and task-level operations, and crucial assembly systems affected by fire dynamics and fire behavior. This program will integrate inherent building construction and occupancy profiling with performance indicators and newly defined tactical protocols that address the newest concepts and methodologies of strategic and tactical fire suppression theory based on the most current technical data

The buildings, structures and occupancies that comprise response districts pose unique challenges during structural fire attack that require new insights and skill sets for fire service personnel. This presentation will examine various buildings and occupancies, providing examples that define and determine how firefighters access, react and expect similar structures and occupancies to perform at a given alarm. Naturalistic (or recognition-primed) decision-making will be integrated into the presentation, with insights for predicting certain expectations for fire travel in a defined (predictable) manner within a room and compartment, for a given duration of time.
